Goal! Student Takes Pride in DePauw’s New Fitness Center

When Jake Pezzuto ’15 was a high school student in St. Charles, Ill., and applying to colleges, he made only two campus visits. Once he experienced DePauw, he knew where he wanted to study.

Because of that, he didn’t have much with which to compare the old weight and fitness rooms at the Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center. “After I was playing soccer here, visiting other schools like Denison and Kenyon, I realized what facilities they had compared to us,” Jake says. “I wondered if it would always be that way.”

A 2012 gift from M. Scott Welch ’82 and his wife, Kimberlee A. Welch, changed all that. Their generosity helped set into motion a complete renovation of Lilly Center, including the creation of the Welch Fitness Center, a modern, 16,000-square-foot space made for student fitness.

As a kinesiology major and starting goalie for DePauw’s men’s soccer team, Jake spends many hours per week in the new Welch Fitness Center. “We can be proud of this,” he says. “For a prospective student, especially one interested in athletics or kinesiology, this is the first place to take them now.”

Jake is also excited by the new kinesiology classroom space and equipment in the renovated Lilly Center. “The old kinesiology lab was like a closet,” he explains. “We had to break up classes to accommodate everyone in the room. Now we have all the equipment and space we need to excel academically.”

After graduation from DePauw, Jake plans to continue his studies by pursuing a master’s degree in either strength and conditioning or nutrition, his two academic passions. For now, he continues to prepare for his future in a renewed facility that DePauw can be proud of.
