Regional Events Kick Off The Campaign for DePauw
While the official launch of The Campaign for DePauw took place on campus in Greencastle, Ind., on Oct. 3, other parts of the country got into the campaign spirit as well. Indianapolis, St. Louis, New York City and Chicago have all hosted their own campaign kickoff events. Hundreds of alumni have joined President Brian W. Casey, Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement Melanie J. Norton, National Campaign Committee co-chairs Sarah Reese Wallace ’76 and R. David Hoover ’67, and student performers from DePauw’s School of Music to formally launch The Campaign for DePauw.
“The Campaign for DePauw gives alumni, parents and friends an opportunity to dream with us and envision an even better DePauw,” Norton said. “This comprehensive campaign will touch every corner of campus and seeks to strengthen the University in five important areas: academic life, student engagement and outcomes, student access, our campus and its surroundings, and annual giving.”
“These regional kickoffs have sparked an inspiring and confirming series of conversations about DePauw’s future, and it was an honor to see so many faithful advocates come together to celebrate and support this great institution.”
In addition to a video highlighting the campaign and its priorities, each event gave DePauw the opportunity to showcase its students, many from the School of Music and the new 21st-Century Musician Initiative. In Chicago, clarinetist Daniel T. Hickey ’15 entertained the crowd, accompanied by Professor Tony Weinstein on piano. DePauwCappella, the student-run a cappella group, also performed. Soprano Julie A. Strauser ’16 treated New York attendees to a foreign-language piece, accompanied by Professor Amanda A. Hopson on piano. Professor Hopson also accompanied baritone vocalist Yazid Pierce Gray ’16 in St. Louis as he sang a show tune. Kevin M. Smith ’15 played tenor saxophone, and was joined by Professor John D. Clodfelter ’94 on piano for the Indianapolis event attendees.
Robert J. ’60 and Marletta Farrier ’61 Darnall were the generous sponsors of the event at The Chicago Club, and Steve L. ’79 and Elise H. Trulaske hosted the St. Louis event at The Bogey Club. Nearly 500 alumni and friends joined DePauw for these regional events, and dozens more plan to attend the Naples, Fla., kickoff on Feb. 11, 2015 at the home of Lee E. ’64 and Marilyn E. Tenzer.
