Jerry D. Pontius '56 Volunteers for 60th Class Reunion
Jerry Pontius ’56 proves that the DePauw story doesn’t end with the 50th Reunion. Having chaired his class reunion committee since his 25th reunion year, Jerry also led the planning of his 60-year reunion.
Jerry, who attended DePauw as a Rector Scholar, is passionate about staying connected to and supporting the University. He and his wife, Mary Goff Pontius ’57, have been loyal donors and volunteers over the years.
“I owe most of what I have (property,
“I can’t imagine that anybody loves DePauw more than my dad. I mean that sincerely. He just loves it. Everything about it,” Barb said. “He loves it so much that he thinks everyone else should, too.”
Soon after graduation, Jerry became secretary for the Class of 1956. He worked with the Alumni Office by mail in the early years and went on to serve two terms on the Alumni Board. He has participated in regional alumni meetings in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Georgia.
Jerry’s service to others, though, starts with family. Mary has been recovering from serious health issues for the past year. Barb said Jerry is dedicated to making sure he has explored all of the rehabilitation options for her. “My dad has been a tireless advocate for her and her well-being,” she said.
Barb said he is passionate about volunteerism and getting involved in the local community. “He always coached our sports teams. He was always very involved in our church growing up,” she said. Jerry also serves as president of two homeowners associations. “Most of the community is much younger than he is, and he is the one in charge!”
Jerry says working with a supportive board and good committee, seeing the results, and enjoyment of class members are the best rewards and joys. The Class of 1956 celebrated their 60th reunion (and Jerry celebrated his birthday) during Alumni Reunion Weekend on campus June 9-12, 2016.
