Bill Watson Rallies Class of 1967

William H. “Bill” Watson ’67 is looking forward to his 50th class reunion June 7-11, 2017, so much that he agreed to co-chair the reunion planning committee. “It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. The volunteers quickly pulled together committees for fundraising, programming, communications and housing unit contacts.

Bill feels DePauw played a significant role in his and classmates’ younger years. “We learned how to navigate our world independently as we prepared for the future. Giving back for this experience demonstrates our appreciation for the foundation provided by our time at DePauw,” he said.

The Watsons have been loyal supporters of The Fund for DePauw (formerly the Annual Fund) for many years. In honor of Bill’s 50th reunion, they have designated DePauw as a beneficiary in their estate plan. “I choose to make my gifts for unrestricted support,” Bill said, “because I want DePauw to have the flexibility to use my contribution where it is most needed at the time.”

A member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Bill earned a degree in zoology and was recruited after graduation to work for the New York office of Aetna Life and Casualty. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, completing Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., and one year of service in Vietnam. He returned to the east coast, spending 22 years with Aetna in New York City and 13 with the company in Hartford, Conn. He met his wife, Marianne, a Danish immigrant, in New York. They have been married 48 years and have two grown children and three grandsons.

“The 50th reunion will be a real experience for the Class of 1967. Times were different back then. We never got a chance to visit The Elms and had very little exposure to the president of the University. For our 50th, we’ll have a reception with President McCoy at The Elms on Friday night. We’ll also have a day of programs at the Prindle Institute for Ethics, which didn’t exist when we were attending DePauw. Then our big Saturday night dinner will be at the brand new Hoover Hall. It’s going to be a great experience, and I’m looking forward to getting back to DePauw for the weekend.”
